In our job we always look for great inspiration. A lot of
our interior projects are made around cooking…and food from amazing kitchens.
A couple of months ago we have visited the newly opened Oriental
Gastrobar of Ron Blaauw. After running a Michelin star restaurant he opened
this lower threshold restaurant close to the Leidseplein in Amsterdam. We were
not disappointed neither about the food or the interior. It is a place worth
visiting in Amsterdam.

For lovers of Chinese food and kitchen it is a place worth a
trip. The traditional dishes referring to the old Chines kitchen are served
with elegance and sometimes in a fantasy way.
The
Chinese food varies tremendously by region: Sichuan cuisine is spicy, Shangdong
cuisine is generally salty and crispy, and Cantonese cuisine is sweet, for
example. We believe here is a bit of all.
China is very famous for its dumplings. The dumplings can be fried or boiled, but the most common way of cooking them is to steam them. We could not miss the Dim Sum Ron Blaau’s style. We have tried the scallops and chicken both to be advised.
One of China's most famous dishes is Beijing Roast Duck. As always could
not resist trying it. It was very good, but not the best we had. The Beijing
Roast Duck used to be eaten only by the emperor, but these days everyone loves
it. Traditionally you eat it with pancakes, cucumber slices and plum sauce.
Here we got it served additionally with green onions. Our complements go to the
pancakes, which were great.
Further we have tired the summer bean
salad with tofu, soft shell crab with king brown mushroom and coconut and more
… all very delicious. The dessert was to die for.
The interior design and custom made kitchen furniture is
rather dark with beautiful light accents making it a bit mysterious. The main
focus point is dark marble bar in the middle with a bras front frame giving the
oriental touch. The bras wall dividers with the same motive are placed in
different parts of the restaurant. The main
part of decoration here are well-chosen lamps giving a scattered light and
creating nice wall shadows. The interior and interior design is now overwhelmed
with oriental touches keeping it to minimum.
